For those of you who’ve missed out on some of my previous fiction, I figured it would be helpful to use Tuesdays as space on my blog where I could share some of the nice things people have said about my writing and revisit some of my backlist.
This is not being done wholly as an ego trip. Writing is a lonely business and, whilst every five star reviews brings lightness to an author’s heart, every one star review (particularly those petty ones with the grudging codicil ‘I’m having to give this book one star because I’m not allowed it to give it zero’) crushes our souls a little. OK, I’m probably exaggerating the whole ‘crushed soul’ idea. But if it doesn’t hurt my soul, it does hurt my Amazon algorithms: and that’s probably more important.
And, I think, it’s important to remind myself that the work I’ve produced has proved satisfactory for many readers. Dr Johnson may have said, “No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money.” However, whilst money is always nice, it’s even better to know you’re writing something that has touched an audience.
